VARTHANA
Project details :
F&B/Retail | 10500 sq ft
Hennur , Bangalore
Completed in 202
Varthana is India’s largest provider of school loans and a rapidly growing student loan company, headquartered in Bengaluru. Founded in 2013, Varthana offers financial solutions to support affordable private schools and students, amplifying access to education and improving infrastructure. With a presence in 15 states and 40 branches, Varthana empowers school leaders and students to achieve their educational goals.
When Merak Studio was entrusted with reimagining Varthana’s new office in Hennur, the architects met with a bare-shell space—a blank canvas punctuated by structural elements that typically accompany large-scale constructions. Beams extended across the expanse, and the flooring’s uneven contours traced the raw framework of the building. Rather than seeing the atypical structural layout as an obstacle, the architect viewed it as an opportunity by cleverly integrating the beams and using them as subtle focal points. He revealed the buildings’ essence, reinterpreting what would have normally been perceived as a “structural flaw”.
The entrance greets visitors with understated elegance. A minimalist doorway frames a serene waiting lounge, where a muted, earthy palette highlights the brand insignia, complementing the welcoming space. Curated decor—art pieces and lush potted plants—adds a sense of harmony, creating an inviting ambience. This pocket of tranquillity sets the tone for a workspace designed to soothe and inspire.
Beyond the waiting lounge lies a meeting room that redefines synergy, exuding an atmosphere of warmth and creativity. Sturdy wooden tables with bespoke craftsmanship anchor the room, while chairs upholstered in warm, inviting fabrics add a touch of comfort. The flowing curves of the chairs and their thoughtful proportions create a visual rhythm that complements the earthy textures of the materials, grounding the space in natural sophistication.
The open-plan workstations echo Varthana’s collaborative ethos. Addressing the structural intricacies of the site, Merak Studio’s architect, Rajan Sharma, introduced soft grey tones to unify the floors and ceilings, while custom oak cabinetry seamlessly integrates storage into the architecture. Natural light filters generously through large windows, complementing the linear lights that offer a soft glow after sunset. These elements coalesce to form a space that feels expansive, cohesive, and effortlessly elegant.
The conference room, a centrepiece of the office, achieves a delicate balance between openness and privacy. Isolated by a sleek glass panel, it houses a wooden conference table that echoes the straight-line interiors, emphasising clean geometry and modern minimalism. The table’s linear design complements the overall aesthetic, creating a harmonious balance between functionality and visual rhythm. The subdued palette is offset by thoughtful touches like a console table with clean lines, blending utility with artistry.
Every corner of Varthana’s office is imbued with meaning. Natural materials—oak and walnut wood—are paired with sleek fixtures, ensuring a clean, uncluttered aesthetic. Even the kitchen and washroom spaces reflect this philosophy, prioritising functionality without compromising on style.
Merak Studio’s vision culminates in a design that feels like an extension of Varthana’s values. The earthy tones, nature-inspired accents, and seamless integration of structural elements craft an office that is not just a place of work but a space that inspires creativity and productivity. Minimalist yet warm, modern yet timeless, it is an enclave of collaboration and calm.
